After leaving Granite High, I attended the University of Utah, graduating magna cum laude with an accounting degree in 1977. From 1970-1972 I served an LDS mission in the Netherlands. I married my wife Jean, in June 1975. Began work with Haynie and Company, a Salt Lake City accounting firm in summer of 1977, ending my service with them in the summer of 1988. I then went to work as a CFO/Controller with a concrete and sand and gravel company, an excavation and pipeline company, a 146 room hotel on the Oregon Coast, and a mill and cabinet shop in Salt Lake City. I became associated with the firm of VanTienderen, Carter and Bolander, CPA's in September of 1997 and have been with them since that time. Our firm specializes in taxes and accounting for small businesses and their owners.
I have also been actively involved in volunteer work, both in my profession and in my Church. I have served on several committees for the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants culminating in my service as a member of the Executive Board of the UACPA from 2002-2007. During that time, I served as the Treasurer for two years and as Vice President, President Elect and President for one year. During my time as President, I also served as a member of the National Council of the AICPA, the national organization of CPA's. I am currently serving as the Chair of the Practice Advisory Council of the UACPA and am teaching financial literacy classes at a substance abuse rehab center in Salt Lake City.
